having driven a 10v NA for years and a 20v turbo, I really can't compare for
the 20v NA.  i have driven the VW 1.8L 4-banger in both 8v and 16v versions:
i agree, no grunt down low on the 4v/cyl head--the 2v head *feels* much
better.  supposedly, the 16 motor has more torque throughout the entire rpm
range than the 8v motor--sure don't feel like it though.
