I can confirm that all the '84 quattro's have shorter gearing. Actually, Jeff
and I discussed this awhile ago, there *is* a difference; we just haven't
been able to document whether it's final drive or gearing related. I believe
that the "short" set was used only in '84 4000q/TQC. Either for economy or
market reasons, Audi went back to the '83 TQC setup which feels the same as
my '87 4000q(almost done being painted BTW). I haven't looked at the fische,
but my info listed only one rear diff for the 4000q, that would lead me to
believe the difference may be in the gearset. If anyone has gearing numbers
handy, I'd like to see 'em!
