RE: Power Steering Fluid
DO NOT USE GENERIC POWER STEERING FLUID. It will cause your pump seals to
die in an extremely accelerated fashion. Use the Audi stuff. The manual from
my wife's old '87 5KSQ said something about mineral oil, which I got from a
local auto parts shop as hydraulic jack oil. I had to add a little every
month or two, adding up to a quart in about 18 months. The steering would
groan as soon as the level got down to even half-way, at which point I would
add a little, and all was happy again. This was much better for me than the
dealer-quoted $1700 steering rack replacement.
