I agree with Eric, the e-mail stated the logic
very well. IMHO, all season tirs are too much
of a compromise. The stock rims with tall/narrow
snow tires are a good solution and the new rims
with dry/rain tires makes sense. I have used
this set-up and it seems to work. Of course, 
my sample size (for the statisticians in the 
list) is limited.
