non-Quattro war story
Sorry for the non-Quattro content, but I've got to brag. Just sold my '91 Mazda
Protege LX, but had one last bit of fun on the way home from an oil change.
I had taken it into one of those quick change places that's affiliated with a
car dealership. Anyway, the car is absolutely stock except for 73,000 miles on
it and a set of Bridgestone RE71s in the stock 185/60-14. I'm just turning out
of the dealership when some kid (God, I'm getting old) goes by in a primered
Rabbit that's scraping the ground, must have at least 205s on it and an exhaust
only exceeded in decibels by his stereo.
Oh, well, "sometimes you've just got to say, 'what the f*ck'". So I find myself
behind him at a light, and we're both turning left with the arrow to head up an
overpass. My plan was originally to head West on I-90, but I follow him onto the
Eastbound ramp, a big 270 degree turn. Anyway, aside from having to stare at
the tach more than I'd like because I can't hear my own engine over his
exhaust it was boringly simple to keep 1-2 car lengths back around the whole
ramp and 1 mile down the highway. This on a ramp I've done once, maybe
twice before.
This was almost as good as hitching myself to the back of a 911 in my 626
one night on West Mercer Way.
I can't wait for the Dunlop D40M2s for the Quattro. (Maybe Monday of next
week, courtesy of the Tire Whack).
