As I recall, shortly after the movie was released "Popular Mechanics"
published an article on the chase scene and the two cars. I remember clearly
that Steve McQueen's Mustang was powered by a highly modified 289, putting
out somewhere around 400HP. The 1968 Dodge Charger was basically stock - if
you can call a 426 Hemi a stock engine. BTW as I recall from car magazines
of the day, the 426 Hemi was rated by the factory at 425HP but actually put
out 519HP. According to the "P-M" article the only modification was 4 Koni
shocks. If you recall there is a scene where the Charger begins in the
right-hand lane, cuts across traffic and then shoots up the hill.
Apparently, that quick move to the left broke all four of the stock shock
absorbers. That's torque!
