Michael.  I would definitely vote for your diff lock mechanism being on 
the blitz.  If your rear diff had actually been locked on the 90 with the 
center torsen, your one rear wheel would have acted very similarly to the 
same setup on the 5k.  Is the rear diff locked pneumatically like on the 
older cars?  This lack of power to the one rear wheel with traction is 
NOT a fault of the specific design of the 90 Quattro system.  Something 
isn't working as designed.  Guaranteed.  Otherwise, quattro would only be 
hype - and we all know better!
