I believe that if this service were provided to me, I would make sure 
to note the gent's name and badge number, and inform him that I would 
be sending him a bill for the detector.  I would do so, too!  If it is legal 
to *posess*, then it is not contraband and is not subject to seizure - and 
it certainly is not his option to destroy it.

Graydon, after careful reading of recent C&D and Autmobile radar 
detector comparison tests, I bought a Uniden (and I believe the same 
model - but I don't have it here with me) last spring from good ol' 
Damark for about $63.  It has performed very well and been very 
dependable.  Its alerts have been consistent and it seems to see far 
ahead.  Perhaps yours is faulty?

I do think that Bel makes a great detector - but my old one (Bel) was 
purchased in 1984 and the technology had long since left it in the 
dust!
