If all you ever did was travel in a straight line on a level surface, you
could probably leave them locked forever. Any cornering will require that
all four wheels travel at different speeds, which the locked diffs will not
allow. The result will be nasty tire scrub and axle wind up. Both are
detrimental; you'll have mighty quick tread wear and you are placing huge
strain loads on the whole drive train.

Lock them only to get un-stuck; on extremely poor traction surfaces; in deep
sand or snow - and any of these at very low speeds. What you need is a
surface with enough yeild or slippage to permit the tires to scrub without
significant wear.
