Motor mounts
I just replaced the motor mounts in my 200tqw due to what I felt was excessive
motion with accompanying symptoms (noise, gear shift motion and at the extremes:
kicking out of third gear at high rpm). The results are not earth shattering
but are definitely noticeable. The car is quieter, I can feel less motion under
accel/decel, and the shift knob moves only 1/4 inch or so going from foot
off-throttle to back on to off.
The swap was straight-forward, but tedious. If you are thinking about doing
this and also plan on swapping out the subframe bushings I would recommend doing
them at the same time. Getting to the bolts on the right side are a PITA with
the subframe attached.
BTW: I may have accelerated the demise of my mounts. The right side is
supposed to be cooled by a tube and duct from the grill. I had blocked most of
this duct with a driving light -- since removed. I thought I had left
sufficient space for the air to swirl around the light and go on its merry way,
but I guess not. This combined with a slight kink in the hose probably sent
the mount to an early grave. This duct also feeds the oil cooler.
The replacement mounts do not have the same part number as the OEM mount. The
new mount for the right side (under the turbo) is now the same mount as is used
on the left side in cars with A/C. The mounts look identical, but have
different part numbers based on a colored spot on the mount. There are p/n's
identifying which color means which part on the mount housing.
