Changes to my 2.2L?
Okay, fellow Q-Listers,
I was talking to a Polish guy here in Seattle, who used to race Rallye in
Europe. He has owned several Quattros here and overseas, and we got into a
discussion of the obviously gutless 2.2 I5. I was asking him if he had any
secrets to getting more power from the engine without having to change the
breathing, i.e. turbo or Supercharging.
He told me that the European 2.2 10v was rated at almost 170hp due to
different pistons and a cam. (Shades of the stroker conversations of the
last month) He said that the main limitation to the engine here in the
States would have been the fuel necessary in the higher compression engine.
He seemed positive that the fuel purchased in the States is garbage and that
the higher compression 2.2 would self destruct unless the fuel was at least
100 octane.
Now, has anyone out there heard what the power would have been in an 86 4KcsQ
(80 in Europe) with a European motor? I've tried to locate some information,
but I can't seem to find any specs for European models.
If anyone out there has some information or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
I'm getting sick of waiting for rain or snow to beat people off the line!
I'm hoping to pull the motor this summer and inject some life into it. At
almost 11 years old, my compression ratio was in almost new tolerances last
month, thank you Mobil-1 (plug) Thus, I think I've got a good base to work
from. I'm looking at matching and polishing the intake and exhaust manifolds
too. Anyone done it? Any results in performance? I await your learned
responses!
