good news

Just heard from my mechanic last night and my car will be ready
tomorrow. He's going to drive it around a bit and I should
have it on Sunday. Also, if all goes well, I will be getting a
1988 BMW K75s bike on Saturday, so it should be a good weekend :).

To recap why my car has been out of commission for so long...
My 1984 4000sq dropped a valve (fell out of the seat) and the
piston mashed it into the head, so I had to find a used head for
cheap. After much searching, I found one, but it took a while
to get it, and then it needed some minor welding and machine shop
work.

The head is now back on, and other than a wrong valve cover gasket,
he says all is well.

My question... you may recall that the only different thing I did with
the car was run 5w30 mobil 1 for a little while (before the failure).
My previous mechanic claimed it was too thin and 'queered' the engine.
Is there any possibility that running this oil, or perhaps the
synthetic itself, led to the dropped valve? I don't think so
since I noted some oil consumption and terrible milage before
the failure.

To be safe, I'm running Quaker State 10w30 and a Fram filter for
1000 miles in case there is any junk in the engine. Then, I'm
switching to a Mann filter and Mobil 1 (I think I bought 15w50
but not sure) unless someone thinks it's a bad idea.

Then, I can get back to fixing all the other stuff...
(seriously, not much, some minor rust, new summer rubber, and maybe
an alarm and cd changer and we're off!)
