Re: Help, Dropping Boost
I have a little problem I have been trying to fix
without success. Over the last four months of
driving my Ur-Q, the maximum boost attainable has
been dropping. In december I reported times of
11.2 stock boost and 10.2 with 15 psig. This last
week in the stock configuration I was getting near
14.0, and I can't achieve 15 psig. In addition,
I have noticed some reduction in the speed of
boost increase.
Sounds to me like a kroaked turbo -- that was the way mine behaved, kinda
sorta. It worked, built up boost (according to the dash gaugelette), but
when pulled, you could see it had a case of indigestion (it had definitely
eaten something that disagreed with being eaten, the vanes were chewed
up...); and there was a substantial amount of play as well. [I can't com-
plain too much, it had nearly 100K miles on it].
It's about time for you to upgrade to a "S4" / "RS2" turbo anyways...
Another thing to make *VERY SURE OF* is that your fuel system isn't leaning
out on ya. This also happened to me -- just seemed to kinda run out of
steam on the top end (not the problem with the cam, and not the problem
with the turbo, and not the problem with the fuel pump, although they all
contributed their respective coupla-C-notes' worth to the fray). Finally
found a flakey ground that was causing the FreqValve to lean out the mix-
ture sometimes...
I have thouroughly done over the schrappnel knobben
and removed it as a possible source of problem.
Since stock boost times are effected this isn't
suprising. I have had some problem with the
accordian hose, but have added another layer of
material to close off any possible leakage. I still
hear some hissing under boost.
Could this been air coming out the cruise control vavles
at the pedals due to a bad one way valve?
I don't think there is any way any of those accessory hoses could bleed
off enough air that you could notice (other than the hissing sounds...)
Would that effect boost by reducing the wg control pressure?
Is there some other area I should concentrate on?
I have used a propane torch as a leak detector with
no positive indications. Any hints on it's proper
application?
Um, other than "kerboom" / um, time to buy a new car anyways?
I would presume same as water -- when the TestFluidOfChoice is sucked
into the leaking plumbing, your idle will noticeable change (e.g., with
propane, ether, etc your engine will go VROOM/Bang/etc; with water it
will go cough cough gag wheeze).
Thanks in advance to the net at large for any assistance.
