Hey who's the FNG?
Hello all. I've subscribed recently and have been enjoying all the
info/banter and decided to throw in my 2 cents worth.
Re Fuel pump buzz: I have an 87 Cgt 2.3 with a fuel pump that has buzzed for
four years with no apparent affect otherwise. My two previous coupes did not
buzz, but my 83 VW GTI did. I have/did not replace either buzzing pump. No
problem. Lucky?
Re Battery of stored car: The above 87 Cgt gets very little use since the
purchase of my 87 5KCSTQ and about the longest it can sit before I have to
jump start it is 5 days. I do have a couple of things (headlight relays,
stereo, cd changer, etc.) hooked directly to the positive post of the
battery which I think might be draining it. I've just accepted this and keep
jumper cables in the Quattro.
Re A8 Quattro: Saw one Sunday in LaCrosse, WI. It had German plates front
and rear. A friend said they had seen one there a couple of weeks ago and
that must be the same one. Are these being imported yet?
Re Clutch problems: My previous Coupe, an 86 Comm Ed, had a similar problem
with the popping/clunking clutch. Mine got to the point that the clutch
pedal would not return from the floor by itself. Turned out the rubber in
the master cylinder was bad and would cause the piston to stick. Replacing
the master cylinder corrected it.
Now for the questions...
Abbreviations: I've picked up most of these but two are still not clear.
What are "UFO" brakes? and what does the "UR" in URQ stand for. I believe
this refers to the original coupe quattro (original QUATTRO ?) but what's UR?
Also were there ever any Coupe Quattros imported with the 85 thru 86 body
style? Or just the early coupe body style?
Gears: I've read a little about a 4.11 final drive swap. Sounds interesting
but how much has to be changed. A junkyard I called would not remove it
alone, wanted to move the transmission as a whole... Actually thought his
boss would only sell it with the rest of the drivetrain, rear diff, etc. Can
the gear be obtained by itself, maybe even new, and just replace the existing
one?
Timing Belt: For years I believed the timing belts get changed every 60k but
lately a couple of shops have told me "not on Audi's, just VW's" That
doesn't seem to be the consensus here. I have almost 72k on the 5KCSTQ (the
CGt got it at 60k) and don't want any expensive surprises. ???
OXS: My engine has a low frequency surge at low speeds and sometimes when
cold which makes smooth driving difficult, especially when decellerating.
I've read a lot about changing the OXS and am looking for a recommendation.
What is the service interval for OXS replacement? Will it help this
problem. Just had the ISV replaced due to 2000 rpm idle and the surge was
unaffected.
K&N filters: Anyone else use these. I have on my last three cars and can't
say I've noticed any marked difference (except more difficulty changing it on
the 5KCSTQ). Comments?
Tires: I have Dunlop SP4000 195-50-15 on the CGt and they're great. These
just became available in the size for the Quattro, but also considering
D60A2. Want to stick with all-season tires, but not sure if there is a trade
off of all-season ability for performance when going to the SP4000's. ???
TIA for any info.
