Mike, your post did not include mileage or model, but If it's an Audi and if
it's over 75,000 miles old, then it could be the pressure accumulator (a.k.a.
"Bomb").
I just changed mine last week in a 50K V8, so they can go at any time.
My brake light would blip on briefly when the brake pedal would be tapped
hard.  
Good luck. It is a relatively easy operation.  The part is about $250.
