Granted this may not be an option for many, but a friend with a tow truck
and hydraulic boom crane comes in real handy for this!  <grin>

Had the engine and tranny out of a '81 4000 5+5 in about 90 minutes.
(Before you all jump in with "I can do better," you should know that this
was the first time either of us had removed the engine or transmission
from a car.  Needless to say, we were pretty proud of ourselves for not
killing the car or ourselves)
