Nononononono... If it were the thermo, he wouldnt have made half way 
through a 5 hour trip. It would have overheated long ago. And once it 
came back it wouldnt have read 1/2 to 2/3. The temp sensor is on the 
head, which would have been red hot if thermo didnt open. My guess is 
faulty sending unit or gauge. Probably sending unit.
