Yes, this is the next phase.  It is most likely the c/v joint on the front of
the shaft.  I just had mine fixed by Anderson Bros. in Chanhassen, MN.  They
rebuilt the front from a used one and repacked the rear c/v joint.  Total cost
was around $200.  Don't worry too much about driving it - I let mine go from
some time in early Dec.

Can't help with the competent mechanic.
