I seem to remember from my tax class that gifts from DISINTERESTED 
PARTIES, no matter the amount, are taxable.  Now, a disinterested party 
is usually non-familial relationships and persons you really do not know. 
 This could be a novel legal question for the IRS.

Maybe Richard could be Dan's spokesman in Tax Court.

I am just providing this as info.  I am still sending Dan money for his 
engine.

Somebody should really figure this out though (tax is not my schtick).
