Subject: transmission

My 92 audi 100CS with textbook maintenance and 83,000 non-stressful
highway miles just lost reverse, 3rd and 4th in the automatic transmission
with no warning but a slight, momentary shudder while backing up. No
grinding, no noise, and I still had 1st and 2nd. It would try to shift up
to 3rd but the engine would race as if in neutral. This car has had no
maintenance problems and no stresses to the transmission such as towing.
Up and down the highway is all. I don't believe it should fail under
these conditions. What's up? Is there a defect audi hasn't told me
about. Should I repair or dump it as is? Thanks
