I have this same problem.  When the light comes on during acceleration, 
it means that the engine timing is being retarded the maximum amount.  
However, sometimes mine even comes on if I am going along at 75 or so.  I 
checked out the codes, and every time I have it says that the knock 
sensor / wiring for the sensor is bad.  I haven't had time to get this 
replaced or "really" checked though.  Chances are my performance is way 
down because the ECU is retarding the timing when it really doesn't need 
to.  You might want to check these things out as well.  Otherwise, see if 
switching to a higher octane gas eliminates the problem (you might REALLY 
be having engine knock).
