oil filters

I think I remember a few years ago that Consumers Report did a test on oil
filters and  Fram came out very well. A visual inspection is an interesting
datum but I'd be curious if there are actual published tests out there. Isn't
someone on the list an SAE member?

Some Anecdotes about oil filters:

My shop teacher once claimed that in really worn engines it was better to let
the particles build up in the bearings to help take up the slop. 

I have some old Popular Mechanics mags. Someone used to make an oil filter
that used a roll of toilet paper as the element, and you could reuse the can!
 That would be a nice thick filter as well :))

I'm not advocating either of these methods for Audi's.
