Does the ECU actually count the teeth?
Yes. It is by counting the teeth that the ECU knows the speed of the engine.
It is possible, (and common on
other ECUs) to guess at TDC after making the reference signal by knowing
how fast the engine is turning. The ECU merely trips a timer, and fires
the plug at the prescribed point.

There's more I'd like to know :-) How heavy are they?
I have one out I can weigh. I'll also weight the 'lightened' KUQEFH flywheel. (NO! it's not together yet F'n&#$*^&@%@#amn!)
