V8 Fun.... NOT.



Ok, lets see.... this all started when I replaced the Original O2 Sensor
at about 56k miles on my 90V8.  The car was surging slightly on partial
throttle.  I was being cheap and bought a 2 wire Non-heated Sensor
instead of the 3 wire Heated Sensor that is supposed to be there......

Car ran worse, surged more.....

Bought a 3 wire sensor, installed, and car runs even worse than the 
2 wire sensor..... huh ?

Now I'm figuring bad sensor ? talked to Graydon about getting a another
sensor and he explains how they work, thanks Graydon :-)  looks like the 
metal casing at the end of sensor protects the probe inside.  Which means
the new sensor is probably ok....

I thought maybe I had a bad connection somewhere, so I took the air filter
housing off and the funnel thing the filter sits in.  

Here I noticed a 1"diameter hose that runs from the intake manifold
into the right valve cover(if your standing in front of the car) that had 3
cracks in it and was basically putty when you touched it.   I called Clair
Audi and got my 10% off (Thank you very much Audi List :-) on a $22.-
dollar hose.

Unfortunately this has not helped :-(

This problem is baffling me... when stone cold the car runs perfect.
About 2 miles down the road suddenly it starts to surge on partial throttle.
You can literally put the pedal 1/3 down and watch the tach go up in
increments of probably 200rpm at a time.  I thought this was symptoms of
the O2 sensor gone bad..... but.... I'm on number 3...  As the car gets warmer
the surging gets less noticiable but definitely does not go away.

Graydon has sent me another 3 wire sensor but I'm hesitant to cut the connector
off and put on the V8 connector until I check out some other things.

Graydon suggests I take a digital multimeter and measure the outputs from the
wires,
I plan to do this when I buy a digital multimeter :-) currently I have a
somewhat beat up
and inaccurate analog meter :-(

Graydon,  What are the values supposed to be again ?  sorry I didn't write it
down the first time you told me :-(

Heater = 12v
Sensor = .5v-1v ?
Gnd = ?

Should the black probe be grounded while measuring the wires ?

Should the car be running ? yes I assume..... but just want to make sure :-)

Anybody have a bentley on the V8 ?  does one exist ?
