How Smart is my A4Q?

Something interesting happened in my A4Q today:

Its 74F outside, I set the auto climate control to 70F. Normally
I get quite a cold air stream from the climate control.

I am low on gas. In fact the warning light/beep came one a few times.
I then noticed that the air is not cold -- looks like the compressor is
not working very well.

Drove 10 miles, got to a gas station, put in some gas. Restart my
car -- and a blast of cold air -- the compressor is working again.

Do you think the car is smart enough to disable the compressor
to save fuel?
