A4 noises

Hi all,
	One quick question and one observation. First, does anyone out 
there with an A4q notice a thumping noise from the front end over 
irregular pavement? This just started on my car (11k mi) and sounds 
suspiciously like my mom's VW when the struts gave out.
	Second, in regards to the Uniden Bearcat that someone was asking 
about earlier, a friend of mine has the radar detector sized one. He says 
that it is kind of cool to listen in (albeit illegal). However, he says 
that he has driven throughout the northeast, encountered many staties and 
the extender warning has never gone off when he was anywhere near a 
trooper. It is possible that here in NY and New England they don't use 
the range extenders. Can anyone corroborate?
