Need Help
Thanks guys for your responses. The saga appears to have ended, and the end
of the dip stick has not fallen off !!!
Took the distributor cap off.....................Clean as whistle.
According to the Bentley, idle should be 800 RPM +/- 25 RPM. Cold, with A/C
on or off, that is exactly where mine idles at. My O2 sensor is brand new (3K
mi. on it) and worked just fine until about a couple of weeks ago until this
problem raised its ugly head. The engine will idled properly when cold and,
even, when warm if I tweaked it a couple of times and I hade no problem
starting it. The problem ocurred when I slowed down, for example coming to a
traffic light, if I didn't heel and toe it to a stop, the engine would stall
and shut off.
Also, when re-starting after I'd driven the car a while, unless I hit the go
pedal, it would stall and shut off. The problem seemed to be worse when the
engine was hot.
Here's what I did:
Had the car idling and pulled the dispstick out.........nothing, not even a
drop in RPM's.
Had the car idling and took off the oil filler cap......... nothing, not even
a drop in RPM's
Took the ISV off and cleaned it (three times) in enough BrakeKleen to float a
battleship. A lot of black muck came out in the wash, put it
back...........No change!
Took the ISV out again and cleaned it.....ran the car about 50 miles. A
little better.
Took the ISV out again and really gave it a bath in Carb cleaner. Drained it
and then gave it another bath in Brake Kleen. Let it dry and put it back. Ran
the car about 130 miles.....No more stalling.
Obviously the ISV gets clogged up with crud and, I guess, if you let it build
up it eventually stops the proper functioning of this valve. The moral of the
story, I suppose, is to take the thing out and clean it periodically.
Can a malfunctioning ISV also cause the engine to run lean? Anybody know?
Anyhow, thanks again.
