A/C problems....

Well we brought the wife's car into Eurosport Motorcar a few weeks 
back to get the A/C fixed.  The compressor was only kicking in on
occasion.  They charged the system for $117.- ouch!, and it worked
ok for a while.....(used it 3 times in last 2 weeks...) of course now 
that the temperature reached 93 here yesterday the compressor
wont kick in again.  Eurosport say's it needs a new condenser 
at $500.- just for the part!  does seem like a condenser problem to 
you guy's ?  is that price normal ? 

I did notice since it was charged there is a loud clunk/grating sound 
when the compressor kicked in for a second or so, then it quieted down....

Now there is no more cluck/grate and the compressor is not kicking in.

Could that clunk/grate be the clutch ?

I'm an A/C rookie here so if anybody has an overview of how the 
A/C works I'd gladly appreciate a lesson here :-)
