Hmmm! I've got nasty cold idle at times and my plug wires are at their 10th
birthday.

The only thing new cap and rotor would do is to get the spark to the plugs
sooner, with new timing or distributor changes. The worn rotor and cap
'points' have a wider gap than new. The voltage difference has to build up
to a stronger level before it can leap the gap. Might want to check the
distributor advance/retard.
just a wild thought.
