RE: '91 internal brakes
Larry, IMHO $1600 to replace ANY brakes is WAAAAAAY high.
Parts list for front brakes (UFO's) on'91 200's (maybe V8's, too):
New discs (note the X for exchange, saves big bucks) 441 615 283 RX about $350
New pads 441 698 151 D about $160
New wear sensors (optional) 441 219 351 A about $50
Check your VIN number, there were two minor mods within the UFO (internal) run.
One involved a screw with a redesigned washer. The newer discs have both holes
machined into them.
Believe it on not, replacing UFO pads and rotors is EASIER than conventional
brakes. You don't have to remove the caliper. You pop off the retaining
spring, pull out the pad, remove the disc, pull out the other pad, and as they
say, installation is the reverse or removal. Easily done in less than 1 1/2
hours, working slowly.
Special tools required/desired: Torx screwdriver and piston compressor
(available at Sears, or any reasonable auto parts or tool store).
After some rough accounting, you've got $900 left for the rear brakes....
If the brakes were installed by the dealer less than one year ago, they might be
under warranty. I assume the brakes have the 16k miles and the car a wee bit
more.
