This is true only on the cars with flush-mounted door handles ... the older
style ones don't have the "toothed mechanism" (since it's part of the alarm
system that's installed on the later cars) but they do have plastic sockets
that mount to the end of the control rods and these tend to break ... I had
this happen to me a couple of times on my the '87 5ks in my family and it's
a pretty cheap and easy repair.  Unlike with the new style locks, you don't
have to take the door frame apart!
