Low compression--what to do
Find a mechanic NOT an Audi dealership that knows Audi's and has
a good reputation and get a second opinion. I've been through more
motors than I care to count, and this stuff about starters, gasoline,
etc., don't make my top 25 reasons list. First, ask your proposed second
opinion mechanic if he can perform a wet compression test. If he says
What?, go to the next guy, and the next, and the next, until you find
someone that knows what he is doing. Second, when you ask what could
cause your problem and you get answers that sound foolish, chances are
you are dealing w/ a fool. Not talking bad here 'bout your mechanic, but....
Al makes good point about "rebuild". Fix what is broken. If
nearby things are spec'd and are within specs, I leavem alone. This of
course does not apply to things like water pumps when you replace the
timing belt, etc. Use your head on this stuff. I've lunched some pretty
nice stuff before and have only done the complete "rebuild" thing 1
time.
Finally, hate to disagree w/ brother Al after he made such a fine
post, but, I am a true believer in the junkyard motor. Depending on what
you plan to do with it, if the leakdown test is good I pay my money and
take my chances.
