Cat Converter and repair
Robert Anderson posted about Cat converters on Friday 06/21/96
and I'm filling in...
Hi Audians,
Just joining the list after buying an Audi 100 E 1989 with
97.000 miles (three speed unfortunately). Decided to "park" my
Nissan 300 ZX TwinTurbo and only run it when weather/traffic
permits.
Went over the entire car and had a basic engine/transmission
service done at Central Volkswagen/Audi here in Richardson
(Dallas), TX.
They diagnosed my need for a new converter and a O2 sensor. They
wanted 800$ for an Audi cat and about 180$ for a sensor.
As I had some "pebble-in-the-can sound" from the rear muffler
(looked to be in great shape), I decided to take it off and try
to empty it of its content. Managed to get about 1.5 liter of
Cat Converter content out of it (looks almost like charcoual
with small "honeycomb" channels).
So, I need a new converter since this one was burnt to
"oblivion". Engine been misfiring earlier and dumping raw
gasoline to be burnt in the cat.
I have put new plugs, rotor and cables on the car since and now
it runs great, but is a bit rough when starting (need two
attempts) and when idling. I think this is due to the O2 sensor
"gone". Is my assumption correct?
Saw in JC Whitney that they list a cat for the 100 at about 80$.
anyone tried it. 02 sensor is the same, a steal at 35$. Will
they fit? Any other mailorder or good Audi parts stores in the
north Dallas area?. Any recommend mechanics?
Thanks /// P-O Selander, Dallas, TX
