Misc. stuff
While I am no fan [or reader for that matter] of Consumer
Reports, one comment on the Corvair and Chebby truck talk by Ian:
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but, facts are sometimes helpful.
Fact is, the Corvair had some very significant handling bugs that
*could*, under fairly normal driving conditions, cause real problems.
Really, the Corvair thing isn't even something that is debated much anymore.
As for the side-saddle tank "explosion" problem. Really, it is
less an "explosion" problem than it is a fuel-fed fire problem. May want
to review the testimony of GM's long-time engineer and testifying expert,
Ronald Elwell, on this subject before you go too much further. Again,
the debate is not whether the side-saddle tanks cause fuel-fed fires in
certain collision--instead, it is focused on whether some alternative
design [inside frame rails, fore v. aft of rear axle, etc.,] was and is
known to be safer. BTW, I think the "rocket-engine" thing while
certainly whacko, was an NBC thought, not a CR thought.
Hope this non-Audi content helps clear up some misconceptions.
