Re: 944T (951) reliability

I think the common problem areas for the 944t is timing belt and water
pump. I thought about looking into buying a 944t at one point, in fact I
found a guards red 86' with 29,000 miles on it last year at $15,000. The
car has won a bunch of concours. The insurance for too high me even
though I am 30 year old.

I think under the Porsche Website linked from the Audi Net site has a
FAQ dedicated to 924/944/944t/968. It's very detail about what to look
out for in terms of used ones plus it point all the major differences
between the different model years. It also listed the common problems
amount these cars. I think all the pre 87' models need a special timing
belt tension adjustment tool to set the proper tension when you
re-install the timing belt, the tool is about $500. All the later model
year cars comes with self adjusting mechanism but it is still a good idea
to use the timing belt tension adjusting tool to re-install the timing
belt.

Find the FAQ and it has more than enough info in it to help you to look
for a good used ones. I printed one out and I read through it very
carefully and it really helps a lot.
