Vacation in Denver

I'm going out to Denver later at the end of July for business, never been there
before. I was thinking of taking my wife and kid out for a vacation before hand.

For those of you who live there, what would you suggest for somebody coming out
for vacation, where to stay, cool things to do, etc. We really enjoy outdoor
things.
