   1.  Voltmeter runs pretty steadily at what appears to be
       14.5 or so.  Definitely above 14.  Is that about right?

I'm insanely jealous --- I feel luck when mine breaks 13.5!
(Of course, given "gauges" in the dash, I'd like to see what a
good DVM across the battery terminals says when your gauge is
claiming 14.5 . . .

       (Already lost a lowbeam, which I just attributed to
	infant mortality combined with harsh ride... see #4)

Actually, 14.5 is about as high as you want *real* system voltage
to go!
