COUPE QUATTRO SWAY BAR MOUNTS

I recently noticed that the sway bar mount bushings were worn and cracked
on my 1990 Coupe Quattro, so I ordered the 4 rubber bushings (car is an early
model, which uses a short link to connect from the sway bar to the lower
A-arm).
Well, had another fun time cursing under the Audi. Apparently the rubber
bushings are press-fit into the A-arm and sway bar, respectively. I cut the
old
ones off, then started installing the new ones. I got the A-arm bushings
installed
OK with a lot of liquid soap and pushing/prying with a large screwdriver. The

sway bar one, however, defied my best efforts. There was no way I could
push
it into place. In desperation, I finally cut the bushing in half and bolted
half in
place on either side of the sway bar.

I was wondering if anybody else has had any luck installing these bushings.
 The
bushing (new) has a approx. 1/16" groove in it, which is supposed to stretch/
expand on installation to accommodate the approx. 3/8" thick sway bar end.
The Bentley manual is no help - it shows the bushing being bench-installed
with
a couple of fancy Audi tools.
