Andrew,

A similar thing happened to my friend's '81 Coupe a couple of years 
back.  As I recall, there is a ball and socket-like assembly on the 
shift linkage with a nylon bushing in the socket.

On Nick's car this had become worn and the ball kept popping out of the 
socket.  At the time the bushing was all of ~79 cents from the dealer.
