'86 5kcst will not start or idles very rough on startup.

My '86 5kcst with 124k miles has recently become very hard to start.  It 
doesn't seem to matter if the car is cold or hot.  Sometimes it will 
take 5 or 10 minutes to get the car started, then it will run very rough 
for a couple of minutes and then the problem totally clears up and the 
car runs great.
I do have spark while trying to start the car and fuel leaks from the 
filter when the line is opened.  I don't notice any smoke or unburned 
gas smell when the the car finally starts.
Any help diagnosing this problem would be greatly appreciated.
