Good News - Don't Plug the Breather!
Got some good news - last week after my crankcase breather hose went
pfluey, a list co-conspirator and I plugged the intake hose so that the
darn thing would idle. It started throwing oil out the rear main!
It still does not make sense to me that plugging the intake hose
could allow pressure to build up in the crankcase, but that's what
happened. When I got the crankcase hose restored (and changed from
synthetic to Castrol 20/50 for insurance, since it is not as prone to
leak) the rear main leak is GONE! WHEW!!!! After a 200+ mile round
trip, the engine looks good.
The moral - if your crankcase breather hose splits, live with the
rotten idle until you can repair it - do NOT plug the intake hose to
the engine.
