     I have sort-of fixed this problem by connecting the light on the 
     passenger side also.  It is now symetrical.

After recounting a tale about being pulled over because of the single 
rear fog light on his A4Q, dan_masi@MENTORG.COM (Dan Masi) asks:

I don't know, but I do know it's a very visible signal.  Since I live 
in San Diego, I don't have a LOT :-) of bad weather to drive my A4Q 
in.  The only time I've used that light was when I drove the car home 
from the dealership the night I bought it.  I didn't realize the light 
was on.  My wife, who followed me home in our other car, said she was 
glad it was on, because it made me easy to pick out in the relatively 
heavy traffic on the freeway that evening.
