Digital Dash Gremlin

I just noticed today that the digital display(87 Coupe GT) for the water
temp moves more
like a tachometer than a temp reading. I think that the water temp is OK and 
the gauge is acting up. The more I press the accelerator the higher the
water temp 
reading goes. I know most people hate the digital dash because of weird quirks
like this but I'd like to keep the car stock if possible. Has anyone heard of
a fix for this weird problem?
