I don't know for sure, but is that radio a "knob type" or "button type"
volume control? If it's knob type, the intermittency/noise is probably due
to a bad variable potentiometer on the volume control knob.  Can you take
the housing off the radio?  Maybe you can get the potentiometer out and
clean it with electrical parts degreaser or compressed air and put it back in?
