Front tranny/diff fill plug

I want to check the oil level and probably change
the synthetic gear lube on my 1991 90Q20v (95k miles).

The fill plug seems to be slightly rounded or "loose";
consequently my 17mm Allen key fits poorly, and jumps out.

Part of this is the torque from the rather long distance
the handle is from the actual plug.

Any tricks for getting this very tight plug turning?
Maybe grab the allen key with a combo wrench near the base of the
plug?

I have about $50 worth of audi magic lube just waiting to go in :-)
