A's 4 Q's....Charlie Smith spring users

Questions answered about the Charlie Smith spring - ECU foolin' mod:

Scott J. Mockry,

Sorry about screwing up your name, but really, you did give me the idea.
Check your post entitled (re: Re: 5000 Turbo mods.....) on 12/22/94 in
which you said "The idea of using a one-way air valve to bleed off pressure
going to the computer pressure sensor might actually work rather well as
long as the signal below 1.0 bar (engine vacuum) is not affected.". It
looks like I implied that you were using this modification on your Q which
I did not mean to, rather that I was "using" an idea that you described; I
like to give credit where it is due.

Paul Timmerman,

The air valve placed in-line with the ECU pressure feed hose bleeds
pressurized air (boost) directly into a vacuum check valve coupled by a
very short hose. This allows no air to enter the system unaccounted for
thus preserving all vacuum related functions, including the dash gauge
below 1.0 bar; as such the idle speed is not effected. There are no other
check valves in this side of the system the climate control and
quattro-lock engagement systems have check valves.

Jim Hudson,

I do not have Charlie Smith's e-mail address or phone # any more, but if
you do an author search of the archives I'm sure you'll find it.
Supposedly he has some springs left or is waiting for another batch to
arrive.

Richard Funnell,

You are correct, the air valve functions purely as an air bleed-off valve
and not like what people would consider an "air regulator". I probably
should not have used that term (regulator), more correctly the system I
describe should be called a one-way pressure bleeder.
