fuel to the fire (was MPG computer fixed, but how does it work???)

Thanks to all for their replies.
Summary:
- nobody tackled the "return of electrical parts" question (turned out
unnecessary), still interested in your experiences for future reference.
- the '86 5ks has a 15A fuse for the pump (pump drew <5A in
"recirculate" mode) so no relay to check,
- the problem was a "jammed" hose clamp at access plate which allowed the
high pressure supply to "blow off", returning all fuel into the tank.
