RPM specific groan from engine??!!

Howdy gang,

	Well here's one I don't think I've seen before on the list, and to make
it worse it's happening in MY car:-{ The other day I was under the hood
listening to see if the fuel distributor was making any noise, it wasn't; but,
between 900-1000rpm's there was a strange groan/low pitched howl that appears
to be coming from the engine. It doesn't do it when cold, but at operating
temp. it is there. At idle rpm(800) there is no groan, and above 1000rpm's it
stops. It's just in that narrow 100rpm range between 900-1000rpm's; it's not a
pretty sound and now I know it's there I can hear it inside the car if I just
barely touch the gas pedal. The car is an '87 5KCSQ, new timing belt, waterpump
and idler wheel went in about 1.5 months ago. Starts and runs strong(Charlie
spring). Does anyone elses 5KCSQ make this noise...should I start to select
something to sacrifice to the Audi god of strange noises??

P.S. Last night I finally made it through the last of the 1100 posts you folks
     generated while I was in Ireland. First Audi I saw upon driving out of the
     airport in Dublin...RS2; it went by me TOO fast to soak it all in, but
     what a great color blue it was. Lots of Audis in Ireland, not may
     quattros, but the marque is popular.
