     Due to the shape of the fuel tank in the  A 4, there is an internal pump
that will transfer fuel from one side of the tank to the other.  Sounds like
it the fuel may have taken the easier route which was to go out the uncapped
filler neck instead of down into the right hand side of the tank.  I'm sure
this is the cause,  it was explained to me after wondering what causes the
"gurgling" noise that you can slightly hear from the back side of the car.  
      Let me know if you hear anything else on the subject, but I'm pretty
confident that this is what happened.
