yes, the correct procedure is to light up the motor and drive off immediately (according to both my s2 and ur-q manuals). both have the 20v turbo, but i recall that the advice was the same for my old 10v ur-q.
I don't think there is anything "wrong" with just letting the engine warm
up idling, other than taking longer (as long as the warmup driving is
gentle). For example to melt the ice off the windshield . . .
However, at least the UrQ (10v motors, etc.) "mechanical" warmup curves
(control pressure regulator, aux air valve) do tend to assume you hope in
and drive away, and tend to make a straight "idle warmup" somewhat rough.
I crank open the aux air valve for winter usage. (I also have a "fast idle"
switch that engages the A/C air valve solenoid for a coupl'hunnert extra
RPM . . . I also "fixed" the ECU to smooth out the warm-up open-loop
mixture shenanigans . . . )
